Short answer: the difference between classic vs hybrid vs volume lashes comes down to how many extensions go on each natural lash. Classic is one extension per lash for a natural, mascara-look (our Classic/Hybrid set is $80+). Volume uses several ultra-fine extensions per lash for a fuller, fluffier look ($120+). Hybrid is a mix of both — natural with extra texture. Want a quick lift with no commitment? Our Ardell cluster lashes are $45.
If you've never had lashes done, the menu can feel like a foreign language. Here in Spring Hill we walk first-timers through it every week, so here's the whole thing in plain English — what each style is, who it's for, what it costs, how long the appointment takes, and how to make them last.
What are eyelash extensions, exactly?
Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic lashes applied one at a time to your own natural lashes with a gentle, long-lasting adhesive. They're not the strip lashes you peel off at night — a proper set is bonded to your lashes and stays on through showers, sleep, and workouts. As your natural lashes shed and regrow (which they do naturally, all the time), the extensions grow out with them, which is why you come back for fills every few weeks rather than starting from scratch.
Done right, they make you look put-together the moment you wake up — no mascara, no curler, no smudging in the Florida humidity.
Classic vs. Hybrid vs. Volume: the real difference
The three names all describe how many extensions sit on each natural lash. That ratio is what changes the look.
Classic lashes — natural and defined
One extension per natural lash. Classic is the "I woke up like this, but better" look — it adds length and a little darkness, like a coat of mascara that never runs. If you want subtle and timeless, this is your set.
- Best for: first-timers, anyone who wants a natural everyday look, or people with already-healthy lash density.
- At US Nails: our Classic/Hybrid set is $80+.
Volume lashes — full and fluffy
Instead of one extension, a tech hand-fans several ultra-fine, lightweight extensions and places that little fan on each natural lash. The result is fuller, fluffier, and more dramatic — without feeling heavy, because each lash is much finer than a classic extension.
- Best for: anyone who wants noticeable fullness, sparse or thinning natural lashes (the fans fill gaps), or a glam look for events.
- At US Nails: our Volume set is $120+.
Hybrid lashes — the best of both
Hybrid is exactly what it sounds like: a mix of classic single lashes and volume fans across the same set. You get the natural base of classic with pockets of texture and fullness from volume. It's the most popular "I want more than natural but not full glam" choice — and a great middle ground if you're unsure.
- Best for: people who find classic too plain and volume too much, or anyone who likes a textured, slightly wispy look.
- At US Nails: included in our Classic/Hybrid set at $80+.
A quicker option: Ardell cluster lashes ($45)
Not ready for a full individual set, or just want lashes for a wedding or a weekend? Ardell cluster lashes are $45 — small pre-made clusters applied for a fast lift. They don't last as long as a full individual set, but they're a lower-commitment, lower-cost way to try the look or get glam for a single occasion.
So which lash style should you choose?
| If you want… | Go with… |
|---|---|
| A natural, mascara-like everyday look | Classic ($80+) |
| Texture and a little extra fullness | Hybrid ($80+) |
| Full, fluffy, dramatic lashes | Volume ($120+) |
| A quick, low-commitment lift for an event | Ardell cluster ($45) |
Still not sure? That's completely normal for a first set. Tell us the look you're after — or even just show us a photo — and we'll recommend the style that suits your eyes and your natural lashes. There's no wrong answer; we'll match the set to you.
How long does a lash appointment take?
Plan for 90 to 120 minutes for a full lash set. It feels long, but it's relaxing — you're lying back with your eyes closed the whole time while your tech places each lash by hand. Volume sets sit at the longer end of that window because hand-fanning each lash takes more time than placing a single classic extension. (Ardell cluster lashes are much quicker since they're applied in small groups rather than one at a time.)
It's worth setting the time aside and not rushing — careful, even placement is what makes a set look great and last.
How long do eyelash extensions last?
A full set typically looks great for two to three weeks before you'll want a fill (also called a refill). Your natural lashes shed on their own cycle, so over a couple of weeks some extensions grow out and a few fall away — a fill simply tops the set back up.
- Fills are quicker and more affordable than a brand-new set, and most people book one every 2–3 weeks to keep their lashes looking full.
- A brand-new (full) set is the better choice if it's been a while, if a lot of lashes have grown out, or if you want to switch styles — say, from classic to volume.
Not sure whether you need a fill or a fresh set? Come in and we'll tell you honestly which one makes sense.
Lash aftercare: how to protect your set
A little aftercare is the difference between lashes that last two weeks and lashes that barely make it one. The rules are simple:
- Keep them dry for the first 24 hours. The adhesive needs time to fully cure — skip steam, sweat, and water on day one.
- Don't rub or pick. Tugging pulls out your natural lashes along with the extension. Pat your eyes dry instead of rubbing.
- Skip oil-based products near your eyes. Oily makeup removers and creams break down the lash adhesive. Use an oil-free cleanser.
- Brush them daily. A quick stroke with a clean spoolie in the morning keeps them neat and fanned.
- Sleep on your back if you can. Smushing your face into the pillow bends and loosens lashes over time.
- Be gentle with mascara — or skip it. With a good set you usually don't need any. If you do, use an oil-free, lash-extension-safe formula and only on the tips.
Taking care of your lashes is a lot like taking care of your nails — small daily habits protect the result. (For more on at-home upkeep, see our Spring Hill nail care guide.)
